Ecofeminism is a movement which argues that a strong parallel exists between the male oppression and subordination of women in families and society and the degradation of nature by similarly masculine attitudes and methods. It can also branch into sexism, the domination of nature, racism, speciesism, and other characteristics of social inequality.

Within the novel the themes of male oppression are clear. The men of the garrison have thesemblance of power and therefore are content with their lot as a result. Though they correctly suspect that the council of Women are keeping secrets from them, the belief that they are in charge is key to their society. They believe they choose who reproduces when really it is the women who do so. In reality of course the women are completely control and they determine who reproduces to a greater degree than the men would ever presume to do.
